Usage Note

Borgne is used literally of a person who has lost the use of one eye, and figuratively of a run-down or shady place: un hôtel borgne suggests a seedy establishment. The same form serves both masculine and feminine. The expression au royaume des aveugles, les borgnes sont rois ('in the land of the blind, the one-eyed are kings') is a common proverb.
