Usage Note

Ouvrir is irregular — its past participle is ouvert, not the expected ouvri. It belongs to the same conjugation family as offrir and souffrir. The adjective ouvert is very productive: être ouvert d'esprit means to be open-minded, and à coeur ouvert (open-hearted) is used both literally (open-heart surgery) and figuratively.
