jalousie

jealousy

noun zhah-loo-ZEE Less Common

Also means

venetian blind

Usage Note

Jalousie covers both the emotion of jealousy and, in an entirely unrelated domestic sense, a slatted venetian or louvred blind. The two meanings coexist in everyday French. The emotion sense pairs with the adjective jaloux (m) / jalouse (f). La jalousie as a blind gets its name because it lets you see out without being seen — watching jealously.

Examples

"La jalousie le ronge depuis des semaines."

Natural Translation

Jealousy has been eating away at him for weeks.
