Usage Note
Grièvement is almost exclusively paired with verbs of injury — blesser ('to wound') or toucher ('to hit') — in news reports: grièvement blessé ('seriously injured'). It is a formal register word not used in casual speech. It descends from the archaic adjective grief ('heavy', 'grave'), now replaced by grave.
Examples
"Il a été grièvement blessé dans l'accident."
Natural Translation
He was seriously injured in the accident.
