agoniser

to be dying, to agonise

verb ah-goh-nee-ZEH Rare

Usage Note

Agoniser specifically means to be in the final throes of death and should not be confused with agonir (an irregular verb meaning 'to heap abuse on someone'). Il agonise depuis deux jours means 'he has been dying for two days'. The noun agonie refers to the death throes or, figuratively, the final stage of something.

Examples

"Le blessé agonisait sur le bord de la route."

Natural Translation

The wounded man was dying at the side of the road.
