Usage Note

Certainement is slightly more emphatic than sûrement and implies strong confidence. In polite spoken French it is also used as an affirmative response equivalent to 'of course' or 'absolutely'. The related adjective certain can mean sure (predicative) or a certain/particular (attributive, placed before the noun).
