Usage Note

Absolu can precede or follow a noun but more commonly follows: pouvoir absolu ('absolute power'). The adverb absolument ('absolutely') is extremely frequent in conversational French as an emphatic agreement marker. Dans l'absolu means 'in the absolute, in theory' and is a common philosophical or everyday qualifying phrase.
