vider

to empty, to drain

verb vee-DEH Less Common

Usage Note

Vider means to empty a container, space, or vessel. Colloquially, vider quelqu'un means 'to fire someone' or 'to kick them out'. Se vider (reflexive) means 'to empty itself' — la salle se vide ('the room is emptying'). The adjective vide (empty) shares the same root.
