vendredi

Friday

noun vahn-DRUH-dee Less Common

Usage Note

Vendredi comes from Latin Veneris dies, 'day of Venus', the same source as Spanish viernes. Like all French days of the week, it is masculine and not capitalized. The expression vendredi saint refers to Good Friday. Days of the week never take an article when referring to a single occurrence: je pars vendredi means 'I'm leaving on Friday'.

Examples

"On se retrouve vendredi matin."

Natural Translation

We'll meet up Friday morning.

Literal Translation

One-oneself meets-again Friday morning
