Tas most literally means a pile or heap (un tas de sable — a heap of sand), but colloquially un tas de functions like 'lots of' or 'a bunch of' (un tas de problèmes — a load of problems). The word is invariable in spelling — the plural is also tas (the 's' is already there). It is informal in the quantifier sense.
