Payant is the present participle of payer used as an adjective, and it contrasts with gratuit (free). C'est payant means 'you have to pay' or, colloquially, 'it pays off'. Entrée payante means there is an admission charge. In informal speech c'est payant can mean an effort that has proved worthwhile or profitable.
