Usage Note
pardessus is invariable — its plural is also pardessus (the final 's' is always written but the pronunciation does not change). It denotes a long, heavy overcoat worn over other clothing, distinct from a manteau (general coat). The word is composed of par + dessus (over/above), literally 'over everything'.
Examples
"Il a mis son pardessus avant de sortir."
Natural Translation
He put on his overcoat before going out.
