nager

to swim

verb nah-ZHEH Less Common

Origin: Latin natare

Usage Note

Nager follows the spelling rule of verbs ending in -ger: an e is inserted before -ons to preserve the soft g sound — nous nageons. The expression nager entre deux eaux means 'to sit on the fence' (literally 'to swim between two waters'). A swimmer is un nageur / une nageuse.

Examples

"Elle nage deux kilomètres chaque matin."

Natural Translation

She swims two kilometres every morning.
