agripper

to grip, to clutch

verb ah-gree-PEH Rare

Also means

to grab hold of

Usage Note

Agripper implies seizing something tightly with the fingers or claws, often with urgency or desperation. S'agripper à (to cling to) is the reflexive form used when holding on for support: il s'agrippait à la rampe (he was clinging to the railing). It is more vivid and physical than saisir or attraper.
