lit

bed

noun LEE Common

Origin: From Latin lectus (bed, couch).

Usage Note

Lit also coincides in spelling with the third-person singular present of lire (to read: il lit = he reads), which can confuse learners. Aller au lit means to go to bed, while faire son lit means to make one's bed. Un lit superposé is a bunk bed, and un lit double is a double bed — useful vocabulary for hotels.

Examples

"Il est encore au lit ce matin."

Natural Translation

He is still in bed this morning.
