Usage Note

Banquette is an upholstered bench seat, common in restaurants, trains, or cars. In old fortification it also referred to a raised walkway behind a parapet. In North African French (banquette nord-africaine) it can describe a low bench along the wall of a room, a cultural fixture in Maghrebi interiors.
