Usage Note

Lagune refers to a shallow body of water separated from the sea by a sandbar or coral reef. The most famous example in French cultural memory is la lagune de Venise (the Venice Lagoon). The word also appears in tropical geography — lagon (m) is the more common form for a coral reef lagoon in the Pacific.
