Usage Note

Illusoire describes something that seems real or achievable but is not — hope, promises, or expectations that will prove hollow. It is invariable by gender (un espoir illusoire / une promesse illusoire). The related noun is l'illusion and the verb s'illusionner (to delude oneself).
