gourmette

chain bracelet

noun goor-MET Rare

Also means

curb chain

Usage Note

Gourmette refers specifically to a flat, interlocking-link chain bracelet, often engraved with a name or initials, traditionally given to babies and children at baptism in French culture. The same chain pattern on a horse's bridle is also called gourmette. Do not confuse with gourmet ('food connoisseur'), which is a different word despite sounding similar.

Examples

"Ses parents lui ont offert une gourmette en argent pour son baptême."

Natural Translation

His parents gave him a silver chain bracelet for his baptism.
