Usage Note

Gourou is borrowed from Sanskrit guru (teacher, weighty one) via English. In French it covers the religious sense of a Hindu spiritual master as well as the pejorative sense of a sect leader who manipulates followers. It is also used informally to mean any charismatic expert or mentor, as in le gourou du marketing.
