Usage Note

Escrime is the sport of sword-fighting with a fleuret (foil), épée, or sabre. France has a strong fencing tradition and has won numerous Olympic medals. A practitioner is an escrimeur (m) or escrimeuse (f). The verb escrimer is archaic but the reflexive s'escrimer à means to struggle hard to do something.
