déjà

already

adverb deh-ZHAH Common

Usage Note

Déjà has crossed into English in déjà vu, that eerie feeling of having lived a moment before. In French it also props up the casual c'est déjà ça (well, that's something at least), and a forgetful speaker fishes for a name with c'était quoi, déjà ?.

Examples

"J'ai déjà mangé."

Natural Translation

I've already eaten.

Literal Translation

I-have already eaten
