Usage Note

Cylindre covers both the geometric shape and mechanical parts such as engine cylinders. A moteur quatre cylindres is a four-cylinder engine, a common phrase in car adverts. In printing, the cylindre is the roller that transfers ink, and in music, an old barrel organ is sometimes called orgue à cylindres.
