clochette

small bell, little bell

noun kloh-SHET Rare

Usage Note

Clochette is the diminutive of cloche (bell). It evokes small, delicate bells — the bell on a cat's collar, a cowbell, or the flower clochette des bois (bluebell). The lily-of-the-valley (muguet) is sometimes called la clochette de mai. As a diminutive it always feels gentle and affectionate in register.

Examples

"La clochette du chat tinte dans le couloir."

Natural Translation

The cat's little bell jingles in the hallway.
