Usage Note
Bru is the traditional French term for a son's wife, equivalent to belle-fille which is more common in modern usage. Belle-fille is now the standard in most contexts, while bru is felt as regional or old-fashioned, especially in Quebec and rural France. There is no masculine counterpart; a daughter's husband is always gendre or beau-fils.
