assis

seated, sitting

adjective ah-SEE Less Common

Usage Note

Assis is the past participle of s'asseoir (to sit down), used as an adjective meaning seated or sitting. The feminine form is assise (elle est assise). The silent final 's' is a common learner trap — neither the masculine assis nor the feminine assise voices the final consonant clearly in natural speech. Rester assis means to remain seated.

Examples

"Il reste assis pendant des heures."

Natural Translation

He stays seated for hours.
