éventuel

possible, potential

adjective eh-vahn-TWEL Rare

Usage Note

Éventuel is a false friend: it does NOT mean 'eventual' (which is final or ultime) but rather 'possible' or 'contingent'. Un éventuel problème means 'a possible problem', not 'an eventual problem'. The adverb form is éventuellement ('possibly'), equally misleading for English speakers.

Examples

"Nous devons prévoir un éventuel retard."

Natural Translation

We must account for a possible delay.
