Usage Note

Typhus is an infectious disease transmitted by lice or fleas, historically responsible for mass casualties in wars and famines. The final 's' is pronounced in French, unlike in many words. It should not be confused with typhoïde (typhoid fever), which is a distinct illness caused by salmonella.
