tuba

tuba

noun TOO-bah Rare

Origin: Borrowed from Italian 'tuba', from Latin 'tuba' (trumpet, war-pipe).

Also means

snorkel

Usage Note

Tuba in French has two distinct senses: the large brass instrument of the orchestra, and the breathing tube used when snorkelling (faire du tuba means to go snorkelling). The snorkelling sense is the more everyday one for most French speakers. The diving mask and tube set is called un masque et un tuba. Both senses are masculine.
