Usage Note
Tante is the standard word for aunt. The masculine counterpart is oncle. In informal or slangy French, tante can sometimes carry other connotations, but in everyday family speech it is completely neutral. Children often address or refer to a close family friend as tante as a term of respect, even without a blood relation.
Examples
"Ma tante habite à Lyon."
Natural Translation
My aunt lives in Lyon.
