sortir

to go out

verb sor-TEER Common

Also means

to take out

Usage Note

Sortir is the everyday word for going out — both leaving a room and heading out for the evening — and sortir avec quelqu'un means to date them. Used with a direct object it flips to 'take out', as in sortir la poubelle, and in the past tense it then takes avoir instead of être.

Examples

"Je sors ce soir."

Natural Translation

I'm going out tonight.

Literal Translation

I go-out this evening
