soeur

sister

noun SUH Common

Origin: From Latin soror (sister).

Usage Note

Soeur is also used as a title for Catholic nuns (Soeur Marie). It is properly written with the œ ligature (sœur), though soeur with separate letters is common in everyday typing. The fraternal counterpart is frère (brother), and the collective term les frères et soeurs means siblings. Demi-soeur means half-sister.
