Usage Note

Sanatorium historically referred to a residential facility for treating tuberculosis patients; in modern French it can also describe any long-stay health resort. The plural is sanatoriums or the Latinate sanatoria. It should not be confused with sanitaire ('sanitary') which shares the Latin root sanus.
