Usage Note

Proscrire is a formal or literary verb meaning to officially ban or outlaw something. It is stronger and more absolute than interdire ('to forbid'). The past participle proscrit can also function as a noun meaning 'an outlaw' or 'an exile'. The word proscription (f) refers to the formal act of banning, or historically to the Roman lists of condemned citizens.
