presbytère

presbytery, priest's house

noun prez-bee-TAIR Rare

Origin: from Greek presbyterion, council of elders

Usage Note

Presbytère is the official residence of a Catholic parish priest, typically adjacent to the church. In rural France it often doubles as the local administrative centre for the priest's parish duties. It should not be confused with presbytie (farsightedness) despite the similar root.

Examples

"Le curé habite dans le presbytère."

Natural Translation

The parish priest lives in the presbytery.
