Usage Note
Poule literally means a hen or female chicken. In familiar speech it can also mean a woman (often slightly derogatory, context-dependent) or, in the phrase poule mouillée ('wet hen'), a coward. Chair de poule ('goosebumps', literally 'hen's flesh') is a very common idiom. The male counterpart is coq ('rooster').
