Usage Note

Pointer means to point at something (pointer du doigt = to point a finger at) and also, in a workplace context, to clock in or out (pointer à l'usine). A pointeuse is a time-clock machine. Do not confuse with appointer (to appoint to a job) or the identical-spelling noun un pointer (pointer dog breed).
