Usage Note
Poète is traditionally masculine; the feminine form poétesse exists but is rarely used today — many women poets prefer poète. The adjective poétique means poetic, and poésie is the noun for poetry. Un poète maudit refers to the Romantic archetype of the cursed, misunderstood poet.
