Pleuvoir is an impersonal verb used only in the third person singular — il pleut ('it is raining'), il a plu ('it rained'), il pleuvait ('it was raining'). The phrase il pleut des cordes ('it's raining ropes') is the French equivalent of 'it's raining cats and dogs'. The noun is la pluie ('rain') and une averse for a shower.
