plaire

to please

verb PLEHR Common

Usage Note

Plaire flips the English logic: instead of 'I like the film', the French say le film me plaît — the thing pleases me. It also powers the magic words s'il vous plaît (please, literally 'if it pleases you') and the friendlier s'il te plaît.

Examples

"Ce livre me plaît beaucoup."

Natural Translation

I really like this book.

Literal Translation

The book pleases me a lot.
