Plaintif describes a voice, tone, or cry that conveys sadness or complaint — une voix plaintive, un gémissement plaintif. The feminine is plaintive. The adverb plaintivement (plaintively) also exists. Derived from the old verb plaindre (to pity/lament), it shares a root with plainte (complaint, formal grievance).
