Patate is the everyday colloquial word for potato in French, with pomme de terre being the more formal term. Une patate douce is a sweet potato. In slang, patate can also mean a punch (il lui a mis une patate = he punched him) or a term of affection (ma vieille patate). The expression en avoir gros sur la patate means 'to be really upset'.
