Usage Note
Pain is central to French culture — the daily baguette is a near-universal ritual, and France has strict legal definitions for what can be called baguette tradition. Avoir du pain sur la planche ('to have bread on the board') means 'to have a lot of work to do'. Petit pain is a bread roll, and pain de mie is sandwich bread.
