oeuf

egg

noun UHF Less Common

Usage Note

Oeuf has a notable pronunciation change: singular un oeuf ends with the 'f' sound, but in the plural des oeufs the 'f' and 'fs' are both silent — pronounced 'deh ZUH'. This is one of the most famous pronunciation traps in French. OEuf dur means hard-boiled egg; oeuf à la coque means soft-boiled.

Examples

"Je voudrais deux oeufs brouillés, s'il vous plaît."

Natural Translation

I'd like two scrambled eggs, please.
