Usage Note
Notoire is often used for negative notoriety (un criminel notoire) but can also simply mean 'widely acknowledged' without negative connotation: un fait notoire ('a well-known fact'). The adverb notoirement means 'notoriously' or 'manifestly'. It is invariable in form across genders.
