mourir

to die

verb moo-REER Common

Usage Note

Mourir takes être in the past tense — il est mort — and its participle mort doubles as the noun and adjective for death. Hyperbole loves it: mourir de faim means to be starving, and mourir de rire is to be dying of laughter.

Examples

"Les fleurs vont mourir."

Natural Translation

The flowers are going to die.

The flowers go to-die
