montre

watch (timepiece)

noun MON-truh Less Common

Usage Note

Montre also means 'showing' or 'display' etymologically, surviving in the phrase faire montre de meaning 'to demonstrate' or 'to display' (a quality). Montre en main ('watch in hand') means precisely timed. Do not confuse with montrer (to show), which shares the same Latin root.

Examples

"Sa montre indique huit heures."

Natural Translation

His watch shows eight o'clock.
