miser

to bet; to count on

verb mee-ZEH Less Common

Usage Note

Miser means to place a wager (miser de l'argent sur un cheval) but also figuratively to bank on something — miser sur la qualité (to count on quality). The noun mise refers to the stake or bet placed. The reflexive is not used; parier is a close synonym for the gambling sense.
