mis

placed, put

adjective MEE Less Common

Also means

dressed, turned out

Usage Note

mis is the past participle of mettre ('to put, to place') used as an adjective. Bien mis means 'well-dressed' — a common use referring to someone's neat appearance. As part of compound past tenses it is neutral (j'ai mis mon manteau — 'I put on my coat'), but as a standalone adjective bien mis / mal mis carries a strong sartorial connotation.

Examples

"Il était toujours bien mis au bureau."

Natural Translation

He was always well dressed at the office.
