Usage Note
Mie refers specifically to the white, soft interior of a loaf, as opposed to the crust (la croûte). Pain de mie is the name for soft sandwich bread (like a British tin loaf), and is extremely common in French households. Do not confuse with mi- (prefix meaning 'half'), which is unrelated.
Examples
"Il préfère la mie au lieu de la croûte."
Natural Translation
He prefers the crumb over the crust.
